Escaping the Heat

A 5.5-hour drive will take you from the blistering Phoenix summer to a beautiful day in San Diego.

Phoenix to San Diego map

When we made the trip the first week of July, I recorded parts of it (like I did en route to Pasadena a couple years ago).

This time, I used Instagram Stories to shoot video – capturing location and temperature info at the same time.

It was 104F (40C) when we left Phoenix and 73F (22 C), when we arrived in San Diego. Big difference!

Do you ever feel like escaping the summer heat?

  1. 40 to 22 must have been such a solace. Living in Bangalore, I have forgotten how summers are. I come from a place in India where summers could hit 40 deg and I used to hate all that heat. As of last night bangalore was 22 and so pleasant. I am glad you could get away. Great pictures and that video.
Btw – inspite of the heat, I would love to go to Arizona :)

    1. That sounds nice! I don’t know why I was thinking Bangalore was hotter than that. Maybe because it’s in south India-? Or maybe because big cities just seem to generate heat.

And, yes, you should definitely come visit Arizona! It’s not always this hot. :)

  2. I have been thinking of you– the temperature in Arizona has been horrible! San Diego sounds much, MUCH nicer. Love the photos, and I’m glad you escaped the heat! My aunt and uncle go to the highlands of AZ when it’s sweltering in Phoenix. May you always be able to escape the oven!

    1. Thanks for thinking of me! Yes, we’re into that ridiculously hot time of year, and it’s always nice to get out of it for a bit. I bet your aunt and uncle go to Flagstaff. That’s another great place to be in the summer!

I just checked – Flagstaff’s high today was 84, which sounds especially lovely when it’s 110 here.

  3. 22 C is a much more civilised temperature! My two American nieces are going to college in San Diego and Phoenix respectively, so I love the idea of visiting them and doing this drive. But not in such temperatures, I hope!

    1. I agree! I’d recommend visiting Phoenix between October and April for the best weather. San Diego is beautiful all year.

  4. It’s more like escaping the summer rain at this point :-)

I always thought the two points were a longer drive. You’re putting the west into perspective for me.
