Color Story: Gems + Jewel Tones (part 1)

Beyond just decoration, color is elemental.

Think of mineral pigments. The way a body of water takes on shades of what it carries – a cloudy blue glacial stream, a teal bay concealing a forest of kelp, a river that turns mud-brown with sediment. The hue of flames shifting from fuel and temperature changes. Or the impact of heat and chemical makeup on the color of lava, of aurora, of stars.

The rich, saturated colors of rubies, emeralds, sapphires, amethysts, and other gemstones are actually from trace elements within them. It’s those so-called imperfections that create the gorgeous palette we call jewel tones.

With Tucson’s gem show season beginning today, it seemed like the perfect time to explore jewel-toned things to make, places to visit, handmade items to shop, and nature to marvel at.

1. Walkers Lasso The Rocks

Apple TV would like you to know that they have received four Golden Globe nominations for Apple Originals programming. I haven’t seen any of the items on this list (I think you need an Apple TV+ subscription), but sounds like they may be good, so let me know if you have!

  • Wolfwalkers (Best Motion Picture, Animated): A young apprentice hunter journeys to Ireland with her father intending to wipe out the last wolf pack – until she befriends a member of a mysterious tribe rumored to have the ability to transform into wolves by night. Directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart.
  • “Ted Lasso” (Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy + Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy Series, Jason Sudeikis): a comedy about a college football coach from Kansas hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer. Starring Jason Sudeikis.
  •  On The Rocks (Best Performance By An Actor In A Supporting Role In Any Motion Picture, Bill Murray): a generation-clash comedy about a young New York mother faced with sudden doubts about her marriage, who teams up with her larger-than-life playboy father to tail her husband. Written and directed by Sofia Coppola and starring Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans.

2. Independents Cinema

Members of real-life band The Sweet Remains are starring in an upcoming musical comedy/drama. The Independents is about three solo artists who reluctantly join forces and journey across America for one last shot at musical glory. It will premiere February 26 to view on demand via Laemmle Theatres and Angelika Cinemas.

Tucson Chews On…

Food news in the Old Pueblo.

  • The Red Light Lounge (inside The Downtown Clifton hotel) is now open for lunch to go! Hours are Monday to Friday, 10am to 3pm. (They’ll continue serving dinner and drinks daily from 5-10pm.)
  • Decibel Coffee Works has started serving food. The kitchen is open daily, 7am-2pm with a limited, soon-to-be expanded menu.

My mom likes to throw these big, informal, everyone-come-on-over get-togethers, especially around Christmas. She’ll set out a bunch of food, while Dad gets the firepit going.

One perennial favorite of her holiday buffets is a delicious hot punch with spiced cranberry and citrus flavors. It tastes like the holidays and makes the house smell amazing. It’s particularly excellent for sipping around the fire on a chilly night.

The recipe makes enough for a crowd without requiring a lot of fuss, so you can focus on decking the halls and whatever else you need to do.

Holiday buffet tips: take a break and eat cake!

Mom makes it (by the gallon) and serves it in her crockpot to keep it hot all evening. She’ll put a ladle and a stack of festive mugs next to it, so guests can help themselves.

Although the title on her recipe card says “cranberry tea,” the tea part is actually optional. Most of the time, she leaves it out. Then you have an equally delicious hot cranberry punch.

Hot Cranberry Tea (or Punch) Recipe

1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon allspice
1/4 cup loose black tea (omit for punch)
3 cups sugar
2 cups orange juice
1/2 gallon cranberry juice
1 cup lemon juice (or substitute a 12-ounce can of frozen lemonade and reduce sugar to 2 cups)
10 cups + 6 cups of hot water

Optional: orange and/or lemon slices and cinnamon sticks (for garnish).

  1. Wrap the spices and tea in a piece of cheesecloth or place into a tea infuser.
  2. Steep in 10 cups of hot water for 20 minutes.
  3. Add sugar, juices, and 6 more cups of hot water.
  4. If desired, garnish with orange or lemon slices and cinnamon sticks.
  5. Serve hot.

Makes about 7 quarts of punch. (Invite a lot of people over.)

The Ultimate Date Night

Phillip and I arrive at the date garden just as the sun has dipped low enough to begin turning green farm fields gold.

The weather is perfect, a string quartet is playing, and long tables set with fresh flowers have been placed underneath the palm trees.

Date Night

This is Yuma’s Date Night. Held a few times a year, the evening includes a gourmet dinner by Chef Alex Trujillo with dates in every course, a drink ticket, live music, and a walking tour of Imperial Date Gardens, which hosts the event in conjunction with the Yuma Visitors Bureau (YVB).

Imperial Date Gardens is technically located in California. But it’s just 25 minutes from Downtown Yuma and part of the same agricultural region. As I’ve mentioned before, Yuma is so close to the California border, you can cross it by accident.

Mark Briones from the YVB welcomes everyone as they arrive, letting us know how the evening will go – and that there are date beer (!) samples at the bar.

Of course, we have to try that. Then we find seats, while servers make the rounds with appetizers.

Between bites of bruschetta, bacon-wrapped dates, and corn fritters, Phillip chats with the people sitting next to us. I watch the sky through the dark silhouettes of palm fronds, as it turns more intensely pink by the moment.

Before dinner is the tour, and it, fittingly, begins next to a date palm.

Imperial Date Gardens expert Raul Peraza shares the history of their acres and acres of trees, which are all descended from 9 that came from Morocco and were planted here in 1935.

He explains how they are hand pollinated and de-thorned by skilled workers on specialized cranes with a platform that wraps around the tree trunks, allowing them to access every side. The fruit is thinned and covered with bags to protect it without pesticides.

We move inside the warehouse where the dates are sorted, packed, and frozen. Since freezing doesn’t negatively affect the flavor or texture, any date you purchase has probably been previously frozen.

When we walk back outside, the sunset has given way to blue twilight. Our path is lit by string lights and our table by candlelight. The Silver Strings Quartet resumes playing a mix of classics and show tunes and pop songs.

Drinks

Phillip goes to get us drinks. He brings me something pink he says is a margarita, but actually tastes like lemonade. (Did he pick up the wrong glass?)

We both prefer the date beer we had sampled earlier, Brother Dewey’s by College Street Brewhouse in Lake Havasu City, which is kinda crazy since I’m not usually even a beer drinker.

Dinner

Each night has a fixed menu that typically remains the same all season. While they can accommodate for food allergies with advanced notice, the nature of eating a catered meal in the middle of a date grove means no one’s going to ask you how done you like your meat, for example.

The deal is basically that they just keep bringing you awesome food from a highly regarded chef. Besides the key ingredient of the dates, we had no idea what we’d be eating until after the tour when Chef Lucy Sedano came out to announce the menu.

First was an elegantly presented cucumber-spinach salad with dates, tomatoes, feta, and housemade vinaigrette.

For the entree, we’re served a full plate with both a pancetta-wrapped filet mignon in wine sauce and a marinated chicken breast, along with asparagus atop bleu cheese mashed potatoes.

It was followed by a delightful date bread pudding. The meal finished with a Kahlua date shake, served in a champagne flute.

Every bite was delicious. It got a little sweet (even for my sweet tooth), but definitely melt-in-your mouth good.

As people filter out, we were each given a small box of dates, so we could savor the tastes of the region a bit longer.

It was a gorgeous evening with amazing food and definitely worth the trip.

The Opening Of The Fire Pit

After our morning hike at Tumamoc Hill, we returned to the Mission Garden that evening for demonstrations on agave rope making and roasting, tequila tastings, a display of products made from agave fibers, plant sale, and The Opening of the Fire Pit.

The day before – probably about the time Phillip and I were driving from Phoenix to Tucson – a group had gathered at the Mission Garden.

Jesús García, an Education Specialist at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, was demonstrating how to build a fire in a traditional roasting pit and fill it with agave hearts. They would be covered with metal from the side of an old washing machine and then layers of dirt to keep the heat inside the earth oven.

Other than the repurposed washing machine, the pit would be similar to the ones we had seen evidence of on our hike that morning, the charcoal gray rocks contrasting with the reddish desert clay only hinting at what was under our feet.

We don’t know exactly how the ancient roasting pits worked. Current tribes in the area have not continued this tradition. However, Jesús García pointed out that just a few miles south of the border, “the tradition is still alive.” He talked to his family in Mexico about the process, taking notes and drawing extensive diagrams about every step.

Adapting those techniques to the Tucson area has taken some trial and error. Apparently, last year’s cooking time wasn’t quite enough.

So this year, they would give the agave a full 24 hours to cook underground before literally digging in and opening up the fire pit.

That must be the magic number. It was soft and slightly sweet. Each variety had a different flavor. One tasted like sweet potatoes.

So what if you don’t happen to have access to a 5-foot by 6-foot roasting pit?

Carolyn Niethammer shared how she roasts quartered agave heads in her home oven – just roast at 350 for 17 hours (!)

Once they’ve been roasted, you can add them into other dishes.

With an electric skillet, she demonstrated how to saute up some agave along with nopales (prickly pear pads), peppers, and tepary beans, a drought-tolerant heritage bean that has recently come back into use. It was delicious!

She followed up by passing around some “Aztec delights,” bite-sized treats she made from amaranth, chia, agave syrup, and chocolate.
