My cousin is getting married at the end of the year in Charlottesville, Virginia, a couple hours south of Washington DC. We’ll head out there, see Charlottesville, and spend a couple days in DC.
For us Arizonans, it’s gonna be cold.
So, along with researching what to see/do/eat in DC and Virginia (and making a pretty serious DC/Virginia/Maryland Pinterest board), I’ve been trying to figure out how to pack light but stay warm!
Here are a few articles I’ve found helpful:
- Tips on how guests can pack and prepare for an out-of-town wedding
- Two weeks in a carryon: cold weather edition
- Cold weather layering
- Tricks for doing laundry while traveling, so you can bring less
Do you have recommendations of winter DC sights or cold-weather packing tips?

Yep, long underwear is awesome. I also agree with the layering idea, but I usually start with a tee-shirt, then a turtleneck, followed by a sweater or sweatshirt, topped off with a winter jacket that has a removable liner. Then again, I’m further North (New Hampshire, to be precise). Hope you have a great celebration!
Thank you! That’s a good layering strategy too. I’m Arizona, so it just feels colder to me than it actually is. Around here, the wool coats come out when the temperature dips below 60 degrees.
Long underwear. Not sexy, but I sometimes throw it on under clothes so I can wear a light jacket. Hey, I said it wasn’t sexy, but it works.
That’s a super good tip! I sometimes forget about the long underwear option, but it really does make a difference.
